Study of autistic savants: "Everyone has math prodigy capability"

Everyone is a mathematical prodigy capable of lightning feats of
calculation if they can dig far enough into the workings of their brain.
This provocative claim by Australian scientists Prof Allan Snyder,
winner of the 1997 International Australia Prize, and his colleague,
Prof John Mitchell, in today's edition of the journal Proceedings of the
Royal Society, follows their study of the astonishing ability of
autistic savants of the kind popularised by the film Rain Man.

Herts County, UK battle over Boston Higashi school

A Royston couple are fighting a legal battle against the county
council to win their autistic daughter the right to attend the Boston
Higashi school in America, renowed world-wide for its ability to teach
autistic children based on Japanese Higashi, or Daily Life Therapy.
Herts County Council is refusing to send her because the school is
not accredited by the Government and would not allow education bosses to
monitor her progress.

MMR fears raise rubella risk in the UK

Parents who spurn the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine
could be responsible for the re-emergence of a disease that causes
severe birth defects, reports the BBC.
Public health specialists fear that media reports of side effects,
including autism, associated with the MMR jab have made parents
reluctant to get their children vaccinated - meaning the infection is
more widely present in the community.
Evidence published in The Lancet medical journal suggests that the
combined jab may cause autism and Crohn's disease.
